On paper, Squarespace and Wix are hard to tell apart. Both are dominated by small contract shops and the local metal trades, machine shops most of all, with sheet-metal and structural fabricators close behind. Both run tiny sites of a couple dozen pages, almost always a single-market brochure with little catalog and no real content behind it. The businesses are the same, the sites are the same size, and the industries line up almost exactly.

What separates them is how the sites look. Squarespace built its name on polished, design-led templates, and it attracts the shop that wants to come across as professional without hiring a designer. In our simple head-to-head design ratings, where sites go up against one another and a winner is picked, Squarespace's sites win markedly more often. It is not the best-looking platform we track, several rate higher, but among the inexpensive tools a small shop actually chooses between, Squarespace tends to appear more professional.
