Is Magento right for manufacturers?
Who Chooses It
Magento powers 189 of the 25,000+ industrial websites we track, ranking 13th of 60 platforms, with a typical site size of around 950 pages.
Magento's manufacturers are, almost without exception, in the business of selling. OEMs, parts suppliers, and distributors together make up nearly all of them, while contract manufacturers, whose sites are about capabilities rather than products, are absent. The trades that stand out are the ones built on large product catalogs, with automotive parts leading the way, followed by hand tools, testing instruments, and commercial equipment. These are firms with a lot to organize, price, and sell, often to businesses and consumers alike.
What sets Magento apart from a platform like Shopify is ownership. Magento is self-hosted so running a store on it means standing up and maintaining the software yourself, usually with a development team or agency behind it. This suits industrial companies whose catalogs, pricing, or B2B workflows are too involved for a hosted store and who have the resources to run something more complex. Where Shopify is the turnkey way to start selling, Magento is where many manufacturers have historically turned when they want to manage the full stack themselves.
