AI-generated answers are replacing traditional search results on Google and other platforms. Manufacturers, OEMs, industrial suppliers, and parts manufacturers who want to remain visible and discoverable in AI-driven search results like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity need an AI search strategy. One of the simplest starting points is the creation of an llms.txt file for your manufacturing website.

Just as robots.txt guides web crawlers, llms.txt directs Large Language Models (LLMs) by providing a structured, machine-readable index of authoritative answers about your company, ensuring that AI tools can quickly process and cite your business accurately. For manufacturers, that means everything from product specs and certifications to engineering capabilities and compliance standards. Creating a plain text file is straightforward, but deciding what to include and how to format it is where many industrial marketing and B2B sales teams get stuck.

Since early 2025, we’ve refined this template to create an optimized llms.txt file for manufacturing and industrial websites.

Formatting your LLMS.txt file for AI search visibility

Your llms.txt file requires Markdown formatting – already included in the template – to indicate headers, links, bold, italics, lists, and more. Here's a full guide to basic Markdown syntax if you need a quick reference.

For the most part, things that need replacing should be self-evident in the file above – items like company name, location, products, and services. The only place brackets are otherwise used in the template is for page links. This is standard Markdown formatting and the brackets wrapping the page titles should be kept.

Validating your LLMS.txt file to ensure AI tools can read it

Once your llms.txt file is live, it needs to be validated to confirm it's machine-readable. Errors related to Markdown formatting, file accessibility, and syntax parsing are common. Just because you can browse to the file and see it doesn't mean that ChatGPT can. Tools available for this are changing by the day, but a simple search for llms.txt file validator should uncover a few you can test. It's also helpful to post your file URL in ChatGPT and other AI tools to confirm they can read and return the data.
